Normally I’m a glass of wine at night kind of girl, but that just doesn’t do it for me when it’s cold out. I need something hot, soothing, and comforting.
So the other night when it actually got into the 40’s here in Texas, I went scrounging through the pantry. There it was, at the back of the top shelf, a box
Swiss Miss of hot cocoa.
For whatever reason, I decided to turn it over to check out the ingredients….gag.
Ingredients: sugar, corn syrup,
modified whey, cocoa (processed with alkali), hydrogenated coconut oil,
nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, less than 2% of: salt, dipotassium phosphate,
mono- and diglyderides, artificial flavor. Contains milk.
Seriously, why does the whey need to be modified, why does the coconut oil have to be hydrogenated, and the milk NON-FAT? Gasp! The horror!
My brain was screaming, “You CANT drink THAT!”, and scheming “You CAN make THAT”.
And so I did. It was delicious.
I’m sure there are several adaptions to this like a pinch of salt, a drop or two of peppermint essential oil, or some vanilla – so experiment as you wish 🙂
4 Ingredient Hot Cocoa
1 Tbs. Cocoa Powder (like this)
6-8 oz Raw Milk depending on the size of your mug
1 Tsp. Organic Coconut Oil
2 Tbs. Grade B Maple Syrup (like this)
Heat Milk to warm, not hot in order to avoid killing all the raw goodness of the milk. Then mix in your cocoa powder & coconut oil. Stir until blended or there are no clumps of cocoa powder & the coconut oil is completely melted. Pour into mug & then gently stir in your maple syrup. Voila!
I haven’t used any non-dairy products to sub in for raw milk, but I’d think coconut milk or almond milk would be acceptable substitutes. Let me know!
